Solar Eclipse in Cancer
The eclipse this Wednesday, or as we astrologers would call it Mercury day, will happen when the Moon eclipses the Sun in the final degrees of Cancer. Ketu will be sitting in Leo, ruled by the Sun who is being blocked from our view. This is an interesting dynamic to ponder, as this eclipse is right on the edges of Cancer and Leo. These last degrees of a water sign before a fire sign are important within Jyotish. The best way to explain it is like a geyser, that explosion of heated water.
This geyser of an eclipse will be averse to the sign that holds Ketu. Eclipses happen when the Sun and Moon conjoin or oppose within a certain amount of degrees from Rahu or Ketu. This eclipse meets the requirement, yet carries the strange theme of both the signs of the Moon and Sun involved intimately with the eclipsing of the Sun.
Eclipses can be a painful time if they highlight certain parts of our charts. This one being along Ketu may bring in themes of Ketu. From the Uttara Kalamrita:
Ketu is the significator of the following: (1) Worship of the lord of Chandi, Ganesha and others, (2) Medical practitioner, (3) Dogs, (4) Cocks, (5) Vultures, (6) Final salvation, (7) All sorts of prosperity, (8) Consumption, (9) Painful fevers, (10) Bath in the Ganges, (11) Great penance, (12) Wind complaints, (13) Friendship with hunters, (14) Acquiring prosperity, (15) Stones, (16) Wounds, (17) Mantra Shastra, (18) Instability of mind, (19) Knowledge of Brahmn, (20} Diseases of the stomach and eye, (21) Stupidity, (22) Thorn, (23) Knowledge of the animals, zoology, (24) Observing silence religiously, (25) Vedanta, (26) All kinds of luxury, (27) Fortune, (28) Suffering from foes, (29) Sparing in eating, (80) Renunciation, (31) Father's father, (32) Hunger, (33) Great pain from peptic or duodenal ulcer, (34) Small pox, or boils and such other diseases, (35) Horned animals, (36) A servant of Shiva, (37) Getting the order of imprisonment revoked.
As you can see the significations are wide and varied, just like the experience of Ketu. A lot of Ketu also comes down to its relationship with Rahu. Rahu will always be searching for something it will never find, with a hunger that will never be filled. Ketu has a lot about letting go, the opposite of Rahu. How letting go can cloud our certainty of the future, how letting go may potentially harm us as well. Living with the Nodes’ influence is a form of balance, this is why nodal squares, oppositions, and returns to our own charts can feel so jarring. We are faced with where to place our focus. Do we keep feeding a hunger that will never be satisfied? Do we not do anything at all? The answer is always somewhere in the middle, a grey area just as cloudy as the nodes are to us.
The houses in your chart that align with the eclipse will show which areas of life to expect these themes. For me its in my 9H of Cancer and 10H of Leo, one of the manifestations was how hard it seemed to be for me to sit down and write this post.
Within the Aries ingress, we can see how this eclipse will operate in a mundane way in the United States. The Ascendant of the Eclipse is in Libra which is the 6H of the Aries ingress chart. Included for my fellow Jyotish Astrologers are the divisional charts of the eclipse for planetary assessment.
The Eclipse in Cancer is happening in the 3H of the Ingress, while Ketu is placed in the 4H. In the eclipse chart itself, Cancer is the 10H and Leo is the 11H.
We can expect to see themes of these houses blended together. So how authority, the 10H, affects communications. And how support is affecting our resources. We will see a lack of support from other countries, and see resources we need imported to be out of reach or more expense, especially considering Mars’ impact on the Ingress’ 2H. This is the 9H of the Eclipse chart bringing in foreign places as well. We may see other countries retaliate by trying to hurt access to certain resources.
Something this makes me think of is the recent news that came out about our missile reserves being depleted. (article here) I mentioned this would likely happen back in my Mars/Saturn conjunction post(here.) This seems to be the activation of the news coming out, especially due to the 3H being highlighted by the eclipse, and the significance of newspapers, communications, etc.
