This station of Mercury is at the junction point of Scorpio. In Vedic astrology, the junction points, or Rksasandhi, are the beginning and concluding degrees of all signs. The most dangerous junction points are those between water and fire signs which includes Mercury’s current station at the final degrees of Scorpio that lead into Sagittarius. What happens when water is quickly heated with fire? It sizzles, boils, and steams away. Mercury is stationing on this junction point or Scorpio where the water is stagnant and without a ripple but steam is quick to rise from the surface before erupting into a boil.
This Mercury retrograde will, like most Mercury Retrogrades, affect our holiday travel. There are prominent midpoints being picked up by the Sun that point to slow commutes and travel, full of interruptions and re-directions. With the inclusion of the Ascendant and Neptune in these midpoints to the Sun, it presents a general and chaotic confusion around us. Imagine how overstimulating the buzz of the airport is during the holiday season then add on flight interruptions, waiting at the wrong gate, or missing a flight and you’ll get the gist of the oncoming travel season. We will all be a little dazed and Mercury will keep us on our toes with little twists and turns during our travel this year.
I highly suggest wearing a mask on flights, there are many significations in this retrograde that directly match, or highlight, certain transits that led to the beginning of Covid-19. I see a larger up-tick in holiday Covid cases than previous years and also the possibility that H5N1 infections in live stock increase up until Jupiter stations direct. When Jupiter is direct and transitions into the sign of Gemini, I expect H5N1 to become a bigger issue in terms of human cases. The sign of Gemini is directly opposite of the sign Sagittarius where Jupiter was transiting with the South Node during the beginning of Covid-19. The likelihood of two concurrent pandemics brewing in tandem is high, and it’s repercussions will cause major disruptions in our daily lives.
Midpoints to Mercury are pointing towards themes of a redirection. We will be compelled to let go of something or someone we have found to not fit into our lives. There will be a struggle to find words, a struggle to even articulate what isn’t working, or a reluctance to accept something isn’t working anymore. But, when we impose this transit over the Libra Ingress chart, it picks up the positive midpoint of Jupiter/Lot of Fortune. These midpoints hint at a “ghosting” energy rather than one with reciprocity, but the positive impact of Jupiter hints at the benefits that surrender can bring with reclaimed space. I also see the strong likelihood of a truth slipping out, so keep an open ear and pay attention to the chatter and actions of relevant figures during this time. There will be a moment during the retrograde where epiphanies strike, and with this a chance to redirect our focus accordingly.
When I look to the Moon and it’s midpoints, it’s burdened with negativity surrounding family, a hardly surprising motif of the holiday season. You don’t need an astrologer to inform you that familial friction tends to be highlighted around this time, but the Moon will generate a heightened state of this energy during the Mercury Retrograde season. The current Moon rules a stalled Mars who station’s retrograde in early December. During this Mercury Station the Moon is in the third house of Virgo co-present the South Node and ruled by Mercury. So the Moon is afflicted but also in the house of it’s joy. The third house is also the house of speech, siblings, and daily travel or driving. There will be the possibility of miscommunication and irreconcilable disagreements due to believing we are 'in the right’. There will be a lot of confusion dovetailing into miscommunication, and also themes of being deliberately misled by people. Misunderstandings and estrangement are themes that will be unavoidable within the dynamics of the family and people we live with. The Moon in it’s joy will keep momentum flowing amongst this confusion, which will further obfuscate matters. Finally, a lunar ruled Mars brings it’s influence as anger that erupts from misunderstandings between family members, friends, or partners that can lead to further contention.
This seems like a textbook Mercury Retrograde delineation with the typical family and holiday stress this season tends to bring. Keep in mind that travel will be incredibly chaotic this year, and that miscommunication and misunderstandings may lead to eruptions of defensive emotion in the right climates. Our nerves and emotions will be tested to their limits over the next few weeks until Mercury stations direct and begins to move back to the critical point where it stationed then finally ingress into Sagittarius and out of Mars’ rulership.
Where is Mercury transiting for you? Mercury will be picking up themes from that house within this energy of separation and release blended with the houses that the South Node and Saturn are currently transiting. These houses are probably loud and demanding attention in recent months from you.
Personally, this lines up with themes of my work/career and coming to accept that my job is going to drastically change in the coming months with the introduction of Project 2025. I have the South Node transiting the house of my Midheaven, with transiting Saturn opposing my tenth house stellium that signifies a lot of my current career. Mercury is stationing near my Ascendant, so I have this moment of a temporary identity crisis. What do I do when the stability of my career over the last decade may disappear? A lot of me, a lot of who I am, was formed around my work which led to a successful career where a niche group of people recognize my face and know my name. Who am I once all of that is removed? What are my goals and dreams, and how can I support those and grow something new within my life to make up for what may be leaving soon? I am feeling the struggle of accepting that I must go in a new direction, and giving up on everything I’ve spent years building up and putting most of my energy into.
Mercury is going to shake our lives up in it’s own peculiar way as we inch closer to the Mars retrograde. It will illuminate our paths and highlight the mistakes and misunderstandings that have led us to these major life changes. It’s up to us to know what can be repaired and what must be scrapped as we take off in a new direction. Mercury will be alongside us through our journey suddenly and sporadically showing us the weak spots in our plans and give us insight on how to mend these holes or teach us how to let go of the things that no longer fit.
